Visiting Lisbon in July means sunny days, packed viewpoints, hot afternoons, and a very good excuse to plan a beach day.
We live in Lisbon, and while July isn’t our favourite month in the city because it can get seriously hot, it’s still a great time to visit if you plan around the heat and summer crowds. The city feels extra lively this time of year, with festivals, outdoor events, and beach days all becoming part of the experience.
In this guide, we’ll share what Lisbon is really like in July, including the weather, crowds, events, what to book in advance, and the nearby beaches worth adding to your itinerary.
Lisbon weather in July
The Lisbon weather in July is usually pretty warm, and you will most likely have good weather! It will be a minimum of 18 C° degrees (64.4 °F) but often in the high 20s.
Expect temperatures with an average high of around 28 C° (82.4 °F) and an occasional day over 30 C° degrees (86 °F). The climate in July and August is generally warm and sunny.
Temperatures drop at night, but will likely still be around 20 C° degrees (68 °F). You can bring a jumper or light jacket for a later hour, but summer is the perfect time to wear summer dresses or T-shirts at night!
Check the weather data before your trip on the IPMA website, but July in Lisbon is generally the time for high temperatures and sunny weather!
Daylight hours, sunrise and sunsets
The days in Lisbon are long in July! The sunrise is between 6.15 and 6.30 AM. You can enjoy a romantic sunset around 9 PM. With 15 hours of daylight, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city and nearby attractions. Many places also have later opening hours!
Water temperature in July in Lisbon
Lisbon is located near the Atlantic Ocean, and the water temperature is pretty cold throughout the year! The water temperature near the city is usually between 17 °C to 22 °C degrees max (62.6-71.6 °F), so it’s chilly enough! It’s always a fun sight to see people get in the water.
Tip: just run in…. After a few minutes, it’s an amazing temperature 😉
Rainfall (if any!)
Most days in Lisbon are sunny in July. It barely ever rains this month, and July and August are the dry months. With so little rainfall, you’ll probably be outdoors most of the time, but if it happens to rain, there is a lot to see and do in Lisbon, too!

What to pack for July in Lisbon?
With so many sunny days, you can pack very light! Think shorts, T-shirts, dresses, and flip-flops.
You’ll most likely walk a lot in the city, and good sports shoes or sandals (with a grip) will get you far on the slippery Portuguese pavement! Especially when wet, you’ll slide in all directions.
Bring beachwear, sunglasses and a cap or sunhat for a beach day. And SPF will be crucial to protect yourself from the sun.
You can wear a cardigan or jacket on the plane, so you always have something to wear if you get cold.
If you travel to other destinations in Portugal, check the forecast there, too. Northern Portugal can be slightly colder, and the Algarve is usually the warmest. Of course, the wind might be colder near the ocean and the mountains, but overall, you’ll enjoy the hot temperatures.
Must-see activities in July in Lisbon
Between April and September, Lisbon is busy with visitors from all over the world. I’ll highlight some famous attractions in Lisbon and some hidden gems. Famous landmarks get busy, and a ticket upfront is certainly needed. The hidden gems are perfect for those wanting to discover off-the-beaten-path locations in the city.
A boat tour on the Tagus River
Staying fresh is crucial with the heat of the weather in July! Joining a boat excursion on the River Tagus is the best way to keep cool. There are many different types of excursions available.
You can enjoy a catamaran tour with drinks and a DJ, a dolphin-watching excursion, or a romantic sunset sailing trip.
You get to see the city from the water, and it’s the perfect activity to enjoy the weather. Book in advance, as the boat tours do fill up in summer!
You can also sail further afield and take boat excursions to Arrábida Nature Park, for example. Or book a private yacht for the day with family and friends and enjoy a day at sea!

Visiting famous landmarks in Lisbon in July
During the high season in Lisbon, the famous sights get very busy. Visiting these highlights early or later in the day is recommended to avoid big crowds.
You’ll also need to book a ticket in advance to skip the line or ensure entrance on the day you wish to travel.
I’ve outlined the most famous Lisbon attractions that will require a ticket upfront:
- Jerónimos Monastery
- Belém Tower (time slot)
- Hop-On-Hop-Off bus
- Any tour to Sintra and entrance tickets to the palaces. Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira have time slots that must be pre-booked.
- Castelo de São Jorge
There are also some famous spots you cannot make a reservation for, such as the Tram 28.
TIP: You can use the Lisboa Card to travel cheaply, and the Lisbon Card also includes free tickets to the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, for example. That saves standing in another queue!
Find shadow in the many parks
With so much sunshine, you can enjoy the shade from time to time. There are many parks in Lisbon, and most are free to enter. Some of my favourites are Parque Eduardo VII, Jardim da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, and Jardim da Estrela.
Lisbon has some incredible botanical gardens, such as Estufa Fria, Jardim Botânico de Lisboa, and the Jardim Botânico Tropical in Belém. These gardens require a ticket, but it’s more than with it! Even in summer, the parks and gardens are nice and quiet.
Lisbon hidden gems in summer
As the city is busy, you might also want to discover some hidden gems instead. The busiest areas are Alfama, Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto.
Anjos, Saldanha, and Campo de Ourique are much quieter! Instead of having lunch at Time Out Market, for example, you can opt for a great meal at Mercado de Campo de Ourique!
You can even combine this with the famous Prazeres Cemetery, with its incredible mausoleums. It’s also near Parque Florestal de Monsanto, a great spot for hiking.
Queluz Palace is also much quieter than the other Sintra palaces and just as beautiful! Or discover Jardim da Quinta dos Azulejos or the Fronteira Palace. There are also many places outside Lisbon that are much quieter than the city centre. Go explore!
Go a day to the beach!
The summer heat is the perfect time to explore the beaches near Lisbon. The first appears after Algés, and the Portuguese Riviera runs until Cascais. Some fantastic praias along the shore are Praia de Carcavelos, Praia de São Pedro do Estoril, and Praia do Tamariz.
The Cascais praias are great, too, but they are pretty small and often crowded. I love the tiny beach at Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães, but Praia do Guincho is great for more space. You can reach all these by public transport, too!
Especially on sunny days at the weekends, it gets busy. If you rent a car (you can take an Uber or Bolt, too), you can explore the Sintra beaches, for example.
Praia da Ursa is incredibly beautiful, and Praia do Magoito is stunning, too! On the south side of the river, you can explore the beautiful beaches of the Costa da Caparica.
Enjoy the sunset from a viewpoint
Lisbon has many viewpoints, and it’s a great spot to see the sun go down. Enjoy a panoramic view from São Jorge Castle, one of my favourites for sunset. The castle requires a ticket, but there are plenty of free miradouros, too.
Some incredible Lisbon sunset viewpoints are Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, Miradouro do Largo das Necessidades, Miradouro da Graça, and Miradouro de Santa Catarina.
Sunny day trips from Lisbon in July
You can embark on many day trips from Lisbon, and it’s the best thing to do on a sunny day! Head over to the south side of the River Tagus to discover places like Parque Natural da Arrábida and Cabo Espichel.
You can combine it with a visit to the coastal town of Setúbal! You can even watch the dolphins in the Sado River or take the ferry to Troia.
You can also head north to towns such as Nazaré and Fátima. Óbidos is extra special in July as you can visit the Óbidos Medieval Festival!
Ericeira is fantastic if you like surfing. Or enjoy the history of the Knights Templar in Tomar. You can also visit Almourol Castle on the way!
The most famous is a day trip to Sintra. Here, you’ll find landmarks such as Pena Palace, Sintra National Palace, the Moorish Castle, Quinta da Regaleira and Monserrate Palace. All these landmarks will require a ticket up front!
If you want to visit lesser-known places in Sintra, add Biester Palace, the Convent of Capuchos and the Sanctuary of Peninha to your itinerary.
Fun activities with children in Lisbon in the summer
Lisbon is a great destination for children, and there are plenty of things to do with kids! Besides a dip in the ocean, your kids might like surfing lessons! Or book a fun ride with the HippoTrip!
Any water activity is great with kids! But you can also look underwater at the aquarium Oceanário de Lisboa.
There are many other options, such as scavenger hunts, escape rooms, the Quake Museum (for older kids), and dolphin-watching excursions on the Tagus River.
Events and festivals in July 2026
Sumol Summer Fest
Sumol Summer Fest is festival at Costa da Caparica on July 3rd and 4th. This Praia de São João event is where Surf, Skate, Art and Dance come together. It’s just around the corner from Lisbon and easy to reach by taxi.
EDP Cool Jazz
Ageas Cool Jazz has several dates in July and happens in the coastal town of Cascais. Enjoy music by Jamiroquai, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, and more. Tickets are on sale now!
NOS Alive
One of the biggest Lisbon music festivals is NOS Alive at Passeio Marítimo de Algés. This year’s headliners include The Foo Fighters, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Florence and the Machine, The War on Drugs and many more! The festival takes place on 9th, 10th and 11th of July, and tickets sell out soon!
Candlelight Lisboa
Candlelight Lisboa is an incredible experience for a romantic night out this summer! Enjoy music themes like ABBA, Vivaldi, Coldplay or Queen in a stunning setting full of candles!
