Learn photography while exploring Lisbon

A private photography workshop gives you the chance to practise in the city rather than in a classroom. We’ll use Lisbon’s streets, viewpoints, architecture and changing light to work on the skills that matter most to you.

The workshop is adapted to your camera, experience level and photography goals, whether you are a complete beginner or already comfortable behind the lens.

We can focus on:

  • Developing a more intentional photographic style
  • Understanding your camera settings
  • Photographing in manual or semi-automatic modes
  • Working with natural light
  • Creating stronger compositions
  • Capturing architecture and street details
  • Improving your travel photography

What to Expect from Your Lisbon Photography Workshop

Before the workshop

After booking, I’ll ask about your camera, experience level, interests and what you would most like to learn.

This helps me adapt the route and workshop content before we meet.

During the workshop

We meet in cafe where we will look at camera settings, composition, light etc. Then we’ll explore Lisbon on foot, stopping regularly for practical exercises and individual guidance.

I’ll explain techniques clearly, show you how to apply them, and give you feedback as you photograph. There is no fixed one-size-fits-all lesson plan.

After the workshop

You’ll leave with a better understanding of your camera, practical techniques you can continue using, and more confidence in the way you approach photography.

Photography Workshop Reviews

What Clients Have to Say

“As a hobby photographer, I was looking for something other than a local guide to discover the city of Lisbon. I was looking for someone who could show me the city’s hidden gems from a photographer’s perspective… THANK YOU Marga… but you succeeded brilliantly. No preparation, nothing mapped out, but you went out with us and showed us Lisbon through your eyes. On a next visit (and that is definitely on the cards), you will certainly hear from us to discover even more of Lisbon.”

“I was gifted a photography workshop from my husband for my birthday after getting a camera for Christmas. I had tried going out and taking photos around Lisboa, but really didn’t understand my camera or how to set up a shot to take good photos. I’m so glad my husband found Marga. She’s such an approachable teacher and I had so much fun spending three hours learning from her and chatting along the way!”

“Marga is an absolute gem in the world of travel and photography! I’ve been on a couple of photo walks with Marga and she captures Portugal in a way that blends breathtaking artistry with deep local knowledge. Whether it’s hidden coastal villages, vibrant city streets, or dramatic mountain landscapes, every shot tells a story—and every tip comes from true on-the-ground expertise. If you want to experience Portugal through the eyes of someone who truly knows and loves it, you won’t find anyone better, she’s the person you want by your side when visiting this beautiful country.”

About Marga

Practical Guidance from a Local Photographer

I’m Marga, a Lisbon-based photographer, travel writer and founder of Discover Portugal. I first became interested in photography in 2006 and have worked professionally since 2012, photographing weddings and travellers across Europe.

As both a photographer and frequent traveller, I understand how challenging it can be to capture a new place while also trying to enjoy the experience.

My workshops are relaxed, practical and tailored to you. I explain techniques clearly, without unnecessary jargon, and give you plenty of time to practise while we explore Lisbon together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need photography experience?

Not at all. The workshop is adapted to your current level. Complete beginners are welcome, as are more experienced photographers who want help with specific techniques.

What type of camera should I bring?

Bring the camera you normally use and want to understand better. A DSLR, mirrorless, bridge or compact camera with adjustable settings works well. You can even join the workshop with a smartphone! Contact me before booking if you are unsure whether your equipment is suitable.

Can several people join the workshop?

Yes. The main workshop price includes one participant. Additional participants can be added during online booking for €35 per person for the half-day workshop or €50 per person for the full-day workshop. Participants can use different cameras and have different levels of experience. I’ll adapt the workshop so everyone receives suitable guidance.

What should I bring?

Bring your camera, a fully charged battery, an empty memory card and any lenses you regularly use. Comfortable walking shoes, water and weather-appropriate clothing are also recommended.

Do I need a tripod?

A tripod is not normally required unless you book a night photography workshop. I’ll let you know in advance if one would be useful for the subjects or techniques you want to practise.

How much walking is involved?

The workshops take place on foot in central Lisbon. The city has hills, steps and uneven cobbled streets, but the route can be adapted where possible. Please mention any mobility concerns when booking so we can adjust the route.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not always mean we need to cancel. In fact, it can even be more interesting! We may adapt the route, use sheltered areas, or adjust the workshop focus. If conditions are unsafe or unsuitable, we can discuss rescheduling based on availability.

Is this also a guided Lisbon tour?

The focus is photography rather than a formal sightseeing tour. However, I live in Lisbon and will naturally share local knowledge and context as we explore.

Can I request a particular photography topic?

Yes. You’ll be asked about your interests before the workshop. Subjects might include camera settings, composition, architecture, travel photography, street details, light or creative storytelling.

Can children join the photography class in Lisbon?

Yes. Children are welcome when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. They should be interested in photography and able to understand and participate in the workshop activities.
