Anyone visiting Lisbon in June is in for a treat! The city centre is filled with colourful flowers, there are amazing markets to visit and fantastic music festivals.

Add some nice weather in June to your trip, and you’ll have an excellent time in the Portuguese capital. The average temperature in Lisbon in June is around 21 °C (70 °F), but it will be warmer many days.

As a Lisbon local, I think June is one of the best months to visit the capital because of one of the best festivals in Portugal: the annual event Festas dos Santos Populares! More about that soon.

In this article, I will explain what you can expect weather-wise and include many tips on what to see in the city! So whether you travel alone, as a couple, or with your family, you can easily create your Lisbon itinerary!

The weather in Lisbon in June

Lisbon in June is a fantastic month to visit! It’s one of my favourite months, mainly because all the flowers bloom in the city. The Lisbon weather is terrific overall, and you can expect temperatures between 16 °C degrees (61 °F) on the low end and 25 °C degrees (77 °F) on the average high.

You might expect mild temperatures in the first half of the month, with some hot days towards July. At night, it cools down to 14 °C to 19 °C (57 °F to 66 °F), so a light jacket might come in handy. The weather along the coast might be cooler, too.

The average rainfall is 16mm spread over two to five days, so don’t forget sunglasses! The sun will shine on most days, and you can visit the beaches near the city! There might be some hot days with temperatures of 30 °C degrees (86 °F).

The temperature in Lisbon in June can be hot, but the sea breeze is often a welcoming treat. The average amount of daily sunshine is 10 hours per day in June. With many warm days and little rain, Lisbon in June becomes one of the most popular destinations in Europe.

Daylight hours and sunsets

The sun rises just after 6 AM and sets around 9 PM. With nearly 15 hours of daylight, you can have plenty of adventures in the city! After a day of sightseeing, you can enjoy food and wine on one of the many terraces in the city.

Water temperature in June

The sea around Lisbon is ice-cold, even in the summer months. In June, the water is around 18°C degrees (64.4 °F), so be aware! However, June is a great month to visit the beaches!

While the sun is out, you can visit the beaches at Estoril, Cascais, and Carcavelos on the Portuguese Riviera and the Costa da Caparica, south of Lisbon.

What to pack for June in Lisbon?

Sunny days

You might wonder what to wear in Lisbon in June. At the start of summer, mild temperatures slowly make way for hot days in the city. With so many warm days in June, you can pack pretty light. Bring shorts, t-shirts, dresses, swimwear, and flip-flops!

And don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun, especially when you go to the beach! During the day, it’s nice and warm, but bring a jacket or hoodie when it gets colder, in the evenings and at night.

Rain and colder weather

With an average rainfall of 16 mm, you probably won’t see any raindrops, but a light jacket will come in handy if it does. You can wear it on the aircraft to stay warm during the flight and take it out when the weather isn’t great or in the evenings.

Coastal areas can also be colder, so a jumper will be handy. There is still plenty to do in Lisbon when it rains, but the change is that it will be dry.

What shoes to wear in Lisbon?

Lisbon is a very walkable city, and good walking shoes are recommended! Flip-flops are great for the beach, but sandals and trainers are great for exploring the city.

Note: After rainfall, the streets can be very slippery. The famous black-and-white calçada portuguesa looks incredible, but it makes you slide everywhere when wet.

Must-see attractions in June in Lisbon

June is the perfect time to explore Lisbon. You can start in Alfama, the oldest neighbourhood. Watch the decorations for Festas dos Santos Populares, enjoy the views from Miradouro de Santa Luzia, and visit Lisbon Castle São Jorge. At night, you can enjoy a Fado show with a three-course meal!

Another fabulous neighbourhood is Belém. It’s known mainly for the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower. Both attractions get super busy, and buying tickets upfront is a must!

If you want to avoid the crowds instead, you can enjoy a river cruise on the Tagus River! With the sun on your face and the wind in your hair, this is a favourite activity in summer!

You can also find cooler temperatures in the many Lisbon parks. Enjoy Campo Grande Garden, the Lisbon Botanical Garden, or the Gulbenkian Museum gardens. Musicians often play live music, and you can bring food for a picnic in the sun.

A popular spot to see the sun go down is Miradouro de Santa Catarina! Arco da Rua Augusta also offers stunning views over the city.

If you prefer sights away from the crowds, Monserrate Palace, Biester Palace, Queluz Palace, and the Convent of the Capuchos are amazing.

Great restaurants in Lisbon in the summer

With so much sun and long days, eating at some fantastic restaurants with outdoor seating areas is great. You can see the sun go down from a rooftop bar in Lisbon or enjoy Portuguese food and a glass of wine with a view. In all fairness, many restaurants have an outdoor area.

One of my go-to places is Lost In Príncipe Real. They serve fantastic food, and the view from the restaurant and terrace is amazing! Lumi Rooftop, Tabernita, and Bar das Colunas also have great outdoor spots.

Portugal Day

June 10th is time for Portugal Day! The National Day of Portugal is a public holiday where people commemorate the death of the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões on 10 June 1580. Besides being an incredible poet, he was a writer and adventurer. His poem Os Lusíadas is one of his most famous.

The official name is Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities (Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas), and the Portuguese celebrate it all over the world.

Before and during the Estado Novo regime (1933-1974), June 10th was known as the Day of Camões. After the Carnation Revolution on April 25th 1974, the date became known as the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.

Festas de Lisboa

Festas dos Santos Populares is a month-long celebration that takes place in several cities in Portugal. The Popular Saints Festival celebrates Saint Anthony, Saint John, and Saint Peter. Saint John’s Day in Porto is celebrated on June 24th (Festa de São João do Porto), and Saint Peter’s Day in Póvoa de Varzim (Noite de São Pedro) is on June 29th.

Saint Anthony is celebrated in Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods on June 13th. Alfama, Mouraria, Baixa, Bairro Alto, Graça, and Bica will be full of street parties. Festas de Lisboa is also often called the Sardine Festival

From the start of June, the streets in Alfama and Bairro Alto are full of decorations. Bars are being built, and the sardines are on the grill. And on June 12th, you can fully enjoy Saint Anthony’s Day in Lisbon.

There is a march on Avenida da Liberdade, whereby groups of different neighbourhoods dance to a specific theme. During the day and early evening, the events are very family-friendly.

Patron Saint Anthony was also known as a matchmaker, and you can also witness the Weddings of Saint Anthony (Casamentos de Santo António). You’ll see people in the street selling Majericos plants, and giving this to your loved ones is a tradition.

But most of all, people are coming to the party on June 12th. You’ll hear Pimba music in the streets, and the beer is flowing. From daytime till late in the morning, you can celebrate with the locals! Dance the night away!

Lisbon Gay Pride

It’s the city’s most colourful festival, with several events spread over two weekends. The date for the EuroPride Parade is not publicised.
