I’ve seen it happen more than once.
Someone picks a “perfect” proposal spot in Lisbon… only to realise too late that it’s packed with tourists, too windy to hear each other, or just doesn’t feel as special as they imagined.
As a Lisbon proposal photographer, I’ve helped plan and capture proposals all over the city. From quiet hidden gardens to iconic viewpoints at sunset.
Lisbon is one of the most romantic cities in Europe and there are plenty of stunning corners to pop the question. I’ll be happy to help you to choose the right spot (at the right time) is what turns a good proposal into an unforgettable one.

Lisbon proposal ideas for the perfect “Yes” in Portugal!
This guide focuses on proposal spots inside Lisbon. I’ll also briefly mention nearby options like Cascais and Sintra later if you’re open to a short trip.
1. Castelo São Jorge
A love story in a historic castle is what many people dream of! Castelo Sao Jorge is, therefore, a stunning location for a surprise proposal. You have amazing views over Lisbon and the Tagus River from the terrace, and you’ll definitely be accompanied by peacocks.
I’ve captured several Lisbon engagements here, and the moment just before sunset is just magical here! I always arrive a bit earlier also to scout out the best quiet location, and it’s usually in the oldest part of the castle on top of the walls.
That’s right, you can even climb the towers and castle walls for higher vantage points! After the proposal, you can discover the rest of the castle and admire the views.

- Fees: You can buy tickets online to visit Lisbon Castle.
- Best for: Scenic views that overlook Lisbon.
- What to expect: Stunning views, castle ruins and MANY peacocks!
- Access: It’s on top of a hill and easy to reach by taxi. Bus 737 drops you off at the front door as well.
- My photographer tip: Plan your proposal before sunset. In summer, São Jorge Castle is open until 9 PM, with fewer people visiting during dinner time.
2. Romantic viewpoints in Lisbon
Did you know Lisbon was built on seven hills? That means you’ll be climbing uphill from time to time, but also that there are stunning viewpoints. There are some very famous viewpoints in Lisbon, and they make a gorgeous spot for a proposal.
You will definitely have a crowd here during the afternoon and evening. For that reason, I usually recommend my couples to arrive early in the morning for a sunset proposal.
Examples of less busy spot are the viewpoints at Jardim do Torel or Miradouro do Monte Agudo.
What you need to know:
- Where: Multiple locations in Lisbon. The most well-known viewpoints in Lisbon are Miradouro de Santa Luzia, Miradouro das Portas do Sol, Miradouro da Graça, Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, Miradouro de Santa Catarina, and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.
- Best for: A proposal moment with stunning city views.
- What to expect: Quiet in the morning, but later in the day there will be street performers and many visitors.
- Access: Easy by taxi and public transport.
- My photographer tip: It can be busy at certain miradouros, especially in the afternoon and before sunset. Come early for a private moment to propose at sunrise.

3. Alfama
Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood, filled with cobblestone streets and lots of charm. Some areas look like an old village, and the houses are colourful or plastered with azulejo tiles.
Behind the castle are some quiet streets for planning your surprise proposal, and this is a regular area for my photoshoots. It filled with atmosphere and the tiny streets offer plenty of privacy.
Instead of getting lost in a labyrinth of small streets, you can also propose a unique location. How about booking a spot for brunch at Chafariz d’El-Rei? It’s a former palace, and in summer, the bougainvilleas are beautiful on the balcony!
Things to know:
- Where: Alfama, Lisbon
- Best for: Picturesque streets, lots of tiles and old town architecture.
- What to expect: Some places in Alfama are super busy, whereas the tiny streets are super quiet.
- Access: Alfama has many cobblestones and it is hilly. It’s accessible by walking, taxi and public transportation.
- My photographer tip: Work with someone who knows the area well. If you plan for a photoshoot with me, I can guide you to find the best location for your big moment!
4. Belém Tower
For a memorable proposal in Lisbon, Belém Tower is perfect. Torre de Belém is located on the banks of the Tagus River and can be reached via a footbridge. The fortification was built to protect Lisbon from invaders, and it has had many uses over the years.
Nowadays, it’s a favourite backdrop for many of my couples. It’s also been newly renovated in 2025/26, and I can’t wait to capture couples here again in the near future.
Additional tips:
- Where: Google Maps link
- Fees: You need a ticket to visit the interior, but the most photogenic area is outside.
- Best for: A proposal at a famous landmark with breathtaking of the river.
- What to expect: It can be busy during the summer. At sunset, there are fewer people around.
- Access: Easiest to reach by bus, train and taxi.
- My photographer tip: You don’t have to enter the tower to make your proposal unforgettable. The tower as a backdrop can be enough! Plan for an early start or sunset proposal to avoid crowds.
5. The Lisbon parks
The Lisbon parks will be your best choice if you prefer to propose in a quiet location. This is where I photograph many proposals, and there are some amazing gardens and parks to choose from.
The busiest park is Parque Eduardo VII, but here you will enjoy a fantastic view over Lisbon and the Tagus River. Depending on the time of year, you’re surrounded by blooming flowers or autumn foliage.
For a quiet Lisbon proposal in a park, I recommend the following options:
- Botanical Garden of Lisbon (paid, my favourite spot!)
- Jardim da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (free)
- Estufa Fria (paid, featuring greenhouses)
- Tropical Botanical Garden in Belém (paid, with many quiet spots)
- Jardim Botânico da Ajuda (paid, offering very quiet surroundings).
Chances are you’ll be all alone during the marriage proposal, and these parks are often the best place to propose in Lisbon.

- Where: Multiple locations in Lisbon
- Best for: A private and intimate proposal in a natural setting.
- Entrance fee: Some are free, but the Botanical Gardens are paid.
- What to expect: Generally very peaceful. Most people pass through quickly.
- My photographer tip: When you visit early in the morning (and towards closing time at the Botanical Gardens), you’ll have most parks in Lisbon to yourself.

6. During a sunset cruise
You can enjoy the most beautiful views over Lisbon from the Tagus River! One of the most romantic spots to plan your surprise proposal is on the water. There are many river cruises departing from Belém. You can do this during the day, but it will be extra special at sunset.
Most boat trips on the Tagus River take two hours. You’ll share a sailing boat or traditional vessel with others, but private boats are available, too! You’ll sail along the Lisbon neighbourhoods and enjoy views of the famous Ponte 25 de Abril bridge.
Good to know:
- Where: Most boat tours leave from Belém, Alcântara and Terreiro do Paço.
- Best for: A private proposal on the water. Most boats have space for 10 to 20 people, and private rentals are also an option.
- Fees: You will have to make a reservation upfront to enjoy a boat tour. Mention your proposal idea and the tour guides can usually adapt to the special moment.
- What to expect: A sailing tour on the Tagus River is a calming experience. You sail along the shores while enjoying the views over Lisbon. Usually, some drinks and snacks are included.
- My photographer tip: I blend in well as a tourist, and have fooled more than one partner to just take snaps during my holidays. Sunset is extra magical for a boat proposal, as the light is soft, and you have a prime location to see the sun go down.
7. Praça do Comércio
Praça do Comércio is one of the most iconic locations in Lisbon, with its yellow buildings, open square and views over the Tagus River. It’s a beautiful setting for a proposal, especially if you want something classic and recognisable.
I photograph here often, and while it can get very busy during the day, the atmosphere changes completely in the early morning. At that time, the square feels calm and much more intimate, which makes it easier to focus on the moment.
You can propose with the impressive Arco da Rua Augusta arch in the background, or walk towards Cais das Colunas for a more peaceful riverside setting with views over the water.
Things to know:
- Where: Praça do Comércio
- Best for: A proposal at an iconic landmark with open space and river views.
- What to expect: Very busy during the day, especially in peak season. Early mornings are much quieter and feel more relaxed.
- Access: Easy to reach by taxi, tram and metro (Baixa-Chiado or Terreiro do Paço stations).
- My photographer tip: Plan your proposal early in the morning for the best experience. The light is soft, the crowds are minimal, and you can choose between the arch or the river at Cais das Colunas for your backdrop.

8. Sanctuary of Christ the King
Another viewpoint is located on the other side of Lisbon, Portugal. When you cross the Tagus River by boat or by car (over the Ponte 25 de Abril), you’ll reach Almada. You will see a big statue here named Cristo Rei.
The famous landmark is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ and was inspired by Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
From this spot, you have an incredible view over Lisbon and the Ponte 25 de Abril (which has many similarities with the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco).
When planning your surprise proposal on this side of the river, coming early might be best to avoid crowds. On the other hand, the sunset here is pretty magical!
Keep in mind:
- Where: Santuário de Cristo Rei
- Best for: A proposal with river views over Lisbon.
- Access: Easy to reach by taxi or car.
- My photographer tip: This spot works best early in the morning or just before sunset. The main platform can get busy, so I usually guide couples slightly to the side for a more private moment with the bridge and Lisbon skyline in the background. After your marriage proposal, you can enjoy a romantic dinner in Cacilhas!

- For a quiet and private proposal, parks and botanical gardens are usually the best option.
- For a scenic view over the city, viewpoints like Castelo São Jorge or Miradouro locations work well.
- For something iconic, places like Praça do Comércio or Belém Tower offer recognisable backdrops.
- For a relaxed and natural setting, Alfama’s quieter streets or green spaces feel more intimate.

Proposals in Cascais and Sintra
Two other very popular options for a proposal in Portugal are Cascais and Sintra. Both are located about 40 minutes from Lisbon.
Cascais is perfect for a beach proposal, and there are a ton of romantic proposal locations. Personally, some of my favourite Cascais proposal locations are near the lighthouse, and the park behind it. In the early morning, you’ll have many places to yourself!
Sintra is known for its fairytale palaces, but there are also several beaches to propose. My dream proposal spot in Sintra is Praia da Ursa. It’s wild, has some dramatic cliffs, and is usually much quieter than other nearby areas.
Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are popular options, but keep in mind these sights are very crowded. Quinta da Regaleira is known for the winding well and symbolic, while Pena Palace offers grandeur and mountain views. The parks offer a bit more privacy, and the lush gardens make a beautiful backdrop.
Cabo da Roca is another fabulous option. It’s the westernmost point on mainland Portugal and best of ocean views and rugged scenery. An early start is perfect for a proposal without many people around.

How to plan a proposal in Lisbon
I can only imagine how nervous you might be, and planning a proposal can be super overwhelming! Especially in a city where you may have never been before, but with a bit of preparation, you’ll drop on one knee in no time!
The location is one of the biggest decisions, and picking something that suits you and your partner is important. Some couples love a big moment with a crowd, but from years of experience, I noticed most prefer a quiet, private moment.
That’s where timing comes in. Anytime before 9 AM is generally speaking calm in Lisbon. Most tourists are still having their breakfast and locals are getting to work. This is why
I usually recommend planning your proposal early in the morning or just before sunset.
It is also important to think about how you will get to the location. Do you have to come up with some tricks to get your partner ready early in the morning in fancy clothes? What is the transportation situation like, and how can you build that into your day in a way that does not raise suspicion?
I also always recommend having a back-up plan. The weather can change quickly, or a tour group just arrived at your chosen spot. Having a second location, or not having a time constraint, can be a huge help here.
If you want everything to run smoothly, working with someone local can make a big difference. I often help couples choose the right spot, plan the timing, and position themselves in the best place for both the moment and the photos. That way, when the time comes, you can focus on asking the question.

Lisbon is a beautiful city, but there are a few common mistakes that can make a proposal feel more stressful than it needs to be. These are the ones I see most often when photographing proposals.
- Choosing a popular spot at the wrong time. Many locations look quiet online, but by the afternoon they can be packed with people. Early morning usually makes a huge difference.
- Underestimating how windy Lisbon can be. Especially near the river and viewpoints, it can be hard to hear each other or feel fully present in the moment.
- Picking a location based only on photos. A place might look perfect online but feel crowded or noisy in real life. Or even worse, it’s closed or being renovated!
- Trying to plan every detail perfectly. The best proposals feel natural, not scripted. Having a plan helps, but flexibility makes it feel real.
- Not thinking about what happens after. Planning a walk, drink, or dinner afterwards helps you both enjoy the moment even more.

How much does a Lisbon proposal photo shoot cost?
A Lisbon proposal photo session with me usually takes 30, 60, or 90 minutes, and prices start at €240 in the city centre.
The 30-minute mini session is perfect to capture the moment. If you’d love a photo session afterwards, the 60- and 90-minute sessions are the best choice. You can even use these pictures for your wedding invitations!

Planning to propose in Sintra, Cascais or beyond?
No problem! I also offer proposal photography in many beautiful places. Cascais has many locations such as beaches, gorgeous monuments and a cute park (kids love it there!).
We can even venture out to Ursa Beach or the Sintra Palaces. Sintra is magical for a proposal, but it does require some planning. Due to travel time and logistics, packages for Sintra and Cascais start from €410.
Please note that commercial photography in Sintra is not always permitted in the palaces. Quinta da Regaleira does not allow commercial photoshoots, but the others do. There is a €150 surcharge for the Parques de Sintra monuments, and the request must be made at least 15 working days prior to the shoot date.
Looking for a castle setting without fees? A proposal in Óbidos is another great idea. It’s near Lisbon and you can even stay overnight in the castle!
