After trying several Porto river cruises at different times of day, we quickly realized the experience can vary a lot depending on the tour you choose. Some cruises felt crowded and rushed, while others ended up being one of the highlights of our time in Porto, especially in the evening when the city lights started reflecting across the Douro River and the Ribeira waterfront became noticeably quieter.
If you’re trying to decide which Porto boat trip to book, this guide covers the options we genuinely think are worth considering. Whether you want a quick Six Bridges cruise, a scenic sunset sailing, or a full-day Douro Valley wine tour, there are a few experiences that stand out far more than the rest.
We’re also sharing which tours are best for different travel styles, and what surprised us most after taking boat tours in Porto ourselves.

We visit Porto regularly, and many times we decide to spend some time on the water. There are several providers, and each time we try a different tour so we always enjoy a whole new experience. Here are some of our favourites, and some we’d love to try in the future.

The 6 Bridges Cruise Porto
The Six Bridges cruise is by far the most popular Porto river cruise, and for good reason. If it’s your first time visiting the city, this is one of the easiest ways to see Porto from the water while passing underneath the city’s famous bridges connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
As the name suggests, the cruise takes you along the Douro River past all six bridges of Porto, including the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Most tours depart from either Ribeira on the Porto side or the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront across the river.
Several companies operate the Six Bridges cruise, but the main difference is usually the style of boat rather than the route itself. Some tours use traditional rabelo boats, while others operate larger sightseeing vessels.
We did this cruise ourselves and thought it offered really good value for money, especially for first-time visitors or families travelling with kids. The route is short enough to keep children entertained, but still gives you some of the best views of Porto’s riverside architecture and bridges from the water.
That said, this was also one of the busiest cruises we tried. During peak times, especially in summer afternoons, the shops can feel crowded and less relaxing than some of the smaller Porto boat trips.
One thing we did enjoy was the amount of information provided during the cruise. Depending on the company, some tours include live commentary or audio guides explaining Porto’s history, architecture, and the importance of the Douro River to the city’s wine trade.
Most Six Bridges cruises last around 50 minutes and usually depart on the hour. In summer, departures generally run from 11 AM until 6 PM, while winter schedules are typically reduced to around 11 AM to 4 PM.
Not all cruises are guided, so it’s worth checking the details before booking. Some tours offer audio guides, while others also have drinks and snacks available onboard for an additional charge.

Step on board a Rabelo boat
One of the most unique ways to discover the Douro River is by stepping onboard a Rabelo boat! During the traditional boat tour, you follow in the footsteps of the wine merchants and learn more about wine cellars and wine transportation.
Even though the route is similar to the standard Six Bridges cruise, the experience feels much more connected to Porto’s history and wine culture. If you’re interested in the city’s Port wine heritage, this is easily one of the most atmospheric boat tours in Porto.
Cruises last 50 minutes and will sail along the six bridges. This river cruise departs from Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
The Douro River from a sailboat
For a more relaxed experience, sailing along the Douro River at sunset is easily one of the most memorable boat tours. Instead of focusing on sightseeing commentary or packed tourist boats, these cruises are much more about slowing down, enjoying the atmosphere, and seeing Porto from the water with a small group.
You’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Dom Luís I Bridge, Porto’s historic waterfront, Foz do Douro, and the Ponte da Arrábida. Unlike the traditional Six Bridges cruises, these tours usually head towards the mouth of the Douro River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean, which makes the scenery feel calmer and less crowded.
We love doing sailing trips in Lisbon as well, so this was naturally one of the boat tours in Porto that appealed to us most. There’s something incredibly relaxing about sitting on deck with a glass of wine while the sun starts setting over the river and the city slowly lights up around you.
Most sailboat cruises last around two hours and typically depart from Douro Marina. Because the groups are smaller, the experience feels much quieter and more personal than many of the larger river cruises in Porto.

Why the Douro River makes a boat tour so special
The Douro River is what gives Porto much of its atmosphere. Nearly every iconic view in the city faces the water, and our favourites are from the colourful Ribeira district, the Dom Luís I Bridge and Vila Nova de Gaia.
What surprised us most during our cruises was how different Porto feels from the river compared to street level. The city becomes much quieter once you move away from the crowded waterfront, and you get a much better sense of the historic bridges, and wine cellars stretching along the riverbanks.
The Douro itself begins in northern Spain before crossing through Portugal and eventually reaching the Atlantic Ocean in Porto. For centuries, traditional rabelo boats transported Port wine from the vineyards of the Douro Valley downriver to Porto’s famous wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, which is why boat tours are still such an important part of the city’s identity today.
Even if you only do a short Six Bridges cruise, being on the Douro gives you a completely different perspective of Porto than you’ll get exploring on foot.
What are the six bridges in Porto?
One of the reasons the Six Bridges cruise is so popular is that Porto’s bridges genuinely look impressive from the water. Seeing them from a boat gives you a completely different perspective compared to crossing them on foot, and it’s the easiest way to see them all.
The most famous by far is the Dom Luís I Bridge, which has become one of Porto’s defining landmarks. From the river, you really notice the scale of the iron structure above the colourful Ribeira waterfront and Vila Nova de Gaia.
We were also surprised by how different each bridge feels during the cruise. Some are historic iron railway bridges, while others are massive modern road bridges stretching across the Douro further towards the Atlantic Ocean.
Ponte Dom Luis I
The Dom Luís I Bridge is the bridge most people immediately recognise in Porto. Built in the late 1800s, it connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia and carries both pedestrians and the Porto metro across the upper level.
Seeing the bridge from the water ended up being one of our favourite parts of the cruise, especially later in the day when the light hits the iron arches and the Ribeira waterfront starts glowing around sunset.
If you have time after your boat tour, we’d also highly recommend walking across the upper level of the bridge for one of the best panoramic views in Porto.
Other bridges you’ll see during the cruise
As the boat continues inland, you’ll also pass beneath several other bridges crossing the Douro River, including the Maria Pia Bridge, the São João railway bridge, the Arrábida Bridge, and the modern Ponte do Freixo.
If you’re looking for something more adventurous, you can even climb the Arrábida Bridge for panoramic views over Porto and the Douro River. It’s definitely one of the more unusual experiences in the city, and very high on our (well… Marga’s) Porto bucket list.

A boat tour can depart from both sides of the Douro River. If you stay in Porto, you can start the river cruise at the quay at Ribeira. The boat tour also begins on the south side of the river, at Vila Nova de Gaia.
Should you book the boat trip in Porto in advance?
The Six Bridges cruise is one of the most popular Porto boat excursions throughout the year, especially during spring and summer. While you can buy tickets directly at the quay, we’d still recommend booking online in advance if you want a specific departure time or sunset cruise.
During busy weekends and holidays, some of the most popular Douro River cruises can sell out surprisingly quickly, particularly the smaller sailboat tours and sunset experiences.
Prices for Porto boat trips usually start around €18 per person for the standard Six Bridges cruise, with longer sailings and sunset cruises costing more. Most tours include either live commentary or multilingual audio guides onboard.
We found the standard Six Bridges cruise to be good value overall, especially for first-time visitors wanting to see Porto from the water without spending half a day on a tour.

⛵️ We’d also recommend choosing a booking platform with flexible cancellation policies. Porto weather can change quickly, especially outside summer, so having the option to cancel or reschedule can be very useful.
If you’re looking for a quieter or more romantic experience, you can also consider a private Porto boat tour. While they’re significantly more expensive than standard cruises, they can be worth it for couples, small groups, or anyone wanting to avoid the larger tourist boats during peak season.

If you have time to venture out of Porto, it’s well worth discovering the Douro Valley! Organised tours depart daily from the city, often including a cruise on the Douro River.

The Douro Valley is filled with vineyards, and it’s where the famous Port wine comes from. Many tourists like staying at the Douro Valley for a night or two, and there are some fantastic hotels. You can even sleep in a wine barrel!
What to do after your boat tour
If you don’t have time for an excursion to the Douro Valley, you can still enjoy a trip to a Port wine cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Discover The Wine Experience at WOW Porto and visit more of the six museums inside! If you want to visit a Port wine cellar, check out Sandeman, Caves Cálem or Graham’s Port Lodge, for example.
It’s a fantastic experience to learn more about Port wine, and of course, you’ll get to taste it, too! It is also great to make a trip with the Gaia cable car on this side of the river.
There are some wonderful places to eat, and from Jardim do Morro, you’ll see one of the best sunsets you’ve witnessed in your life!
Of course, there are many other sights to see in Porto. Some highlights are Bolsa Palace, the Sé Cathedral, and the Clérigos Tower.
Lello Bookstore has a long queue, but the interior will blow your mind! You can also discover the many viewpoints in Porto and enjoy the views of the Douro River from above.
Visit Mercado Bom Sucesso for a tasty food experience, or try the local dish Francesinha! Art lovers will have a great time at Serralves Museum and Park, where you’ll find gardens and stunning buildings. Or discover the beautiful azulejo tiles at the Chapel of Souls and Igreja do Carmo.
Where to stay near the Douro River
After a six bridges cruise, you might want to enjoy more bridge views during your trip to Porto. Thankfully, the city has many hotels and accommodations with a view of the Ponte Dom Luis Bridge! There is a wide selection available in both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
Please note that not always all rooms have a river view, so double-check this when booking. Some fabulous places to stay are Guest House Douro and the Riverside City Centre Apartments.
We stayed at Domum 3 (pictured) on during a dreary December weekend, but even then, the views are lovely! Another lovely riverside hotel we like staying at is Vila Gale Porto Ribeira. It’s a bit further from the city centre, but perfect for a good night’s sleep and river views.
If you prefer a stay in Vila Nova de Gaia and marvel at the view over Porto, Vincci Ponte de Ferro is more than amazing! This 4*hotel even contains a seasonal outdoor swimming pool with a view!

Taking a boat tour on the Douro River ended up being one of our favourite experiences in Porto. If it’s your first time visiting Porto, we think the classic Six Bridges cruise is still the best place to start. It’s affordable, easy to fit into your itinerary, and offers some of the city’s most iconic views in under an hour.
That said, if you prefer a quieter and more atmospheric experience, we’d personally choose one of the smaller sailboat cruises instead. Watching the sun go down over the Douro with a glass of wine onboard felt far more relaxing and memorable than we expected.
No matter which boat tour you choose, booking ahead is worth it, especially during the busy spring and summer months when the most popular cruises can sell out quickly.
