Fuseta Portugal: A guide to beaches, food and activities

Looking for a quieter Algarve destination without the crowds? Fuseta might be exactly what you need!

This small coastal town is located between Faro and Tavira in the eastern Algarve, and is easy to reach by train or car, but it still feels like a hidden gem. But what are some of the things to do in Fuseta you might wonder?

The quick answer: Fuseta Beach! Many tourists and locals travel to the Algarve in summer to enjoy their summer holidays, and so do we most summers! We love the Ria Formosa and Fuseta is a gateway to discover this natural park.

In this guide, we’ll show you the best things to do in Fuseta, including how to visit Fuseta Beach, plus a few great spots to eat after a day in the sun.

What is Fuseta Portugal known for?

The town of Fuseta (also spelled as Fuzeta) is small, but there is one reason many people visit, and that is for visiting the Fuseta island beach.

It’s located directly on the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of our favourite parts of the Algarve. The Ria Formosa is a huge natural lagoon system in the Algarve, and the islands along the coast are a part of it.

Fuseta is a traditional fishing village where you can enjoy local seafood and a relaxed atmosphere. It really feels like time stood still! Fuseta is also a very walkable town, and you can easily stay a good part of your day here during your Algarve holiday.

What is there to do in Fuseta, Portugal

Take the ferry to Praia da Ilha da Fuseta

From the harbour in Fuseta you can take the ferry to Praia da Ilha da Fuseta. It’s the cheapest way to reach the island, but there are also water taxis if the schedule does not fit your timing. Take note of the last ferry back to Fuseta so you don’t get stuck on the island.

Along the way, you will also spot Estação de Socorros a Náufragos de Fuseta. This is a former shipwreck rescue station from the 20th-century. It is a unique object and the location within the estuary was perfect for launching lifeboats even at low tide, which is why its construction is on stilts.

Relax on Fuseta Beach

Once you arrive at Praia da Fuseta, you can choose to rent a beach chair or walk further and enjoy the sandy beach. At the main area you can find a restaurant, bathroom, water sport activities and there is a lifeguard on duty.

Fuseta Beach is located on an island, known as Ilha da Armona and you can find more beaches here! We usually like a quiet spot, but the beach is so stretched that it never feels busy. If you want to walk to the end of the island, you can walk along the beach to Praia da Barra Velha or even Praia da Armona.

Take a boat into the Ria Formosa

If you’re a nature lover, we highly recommend seeing more of the Ria Formosa nature park. Over the years, we have cycled and hiked around the mainland, but also took a boat trip to spot birds or join a dolphin observation tour.

Depending on the tide, you can see flamingos near the salt pans, and some boat tours take you out further to see to spot dolphins!

Visit the centre of Fuseta

If you have time, it’s fun to walk through the centre of town. At the roundabout near the harbour, you can spot the moment of the bacalhau fisherman (Monumento Pescador do Bacalhau). Keep walking along the river, and you can visit Fuseta market, the Mercado Municipal.

You will also see many parallel streets that all lead to the main square, Praça da República, where you find some local restaurants, shops, a mini market and cafés.

Walk along the waterfront promenade

The marina is Fuseta is small and full of fishing boats. When you’re lucky, you can see the fisherman come back with freshly caught fish, and you might spot some clean out their nets along the docks. This is also the area where you can take the ferry, boat tours or a water taxi.

Discover the Fuseta restaurants

There are many restaurants in Fuseta, and being so close to the sea, you can expect many fish dishes on the menu. We had a wonderful lunch with fresh fish at Restaurante Casa Corvo, and Restaurante Maresia was perfect for a fancier dinner!

Here are some of our other favourite restaurants and cafés in Fuseta:

  • Adega do Sal
  • Restaurante À do Rui
  • Restaurante O Coral
  • Salgrosso

Visit nearby places

Fuseta is near Faro, the capital of the Algarve. Many people land at the airport and skip visiting the centre, but there is a lot to see and do! Some highlights are the Bone Chapel inside Igreja da Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo, Faro Cathedral and the Old Town. You can easily spend a full-day walking around here!

Tavira is a smaller city, but one of very historical importance. You will find the Roman bridge that crosses the Galão River, and the view from Tavira Castle is amazing!

Olhão is very close to Fuseta and a highlight is the Mercados de Olhão. We also loved visiting the salt pans Salinas do Grelha for sunset as we spotted many flamingos!
