Things to do in Ferragudo Algarve
Ferragudo in Portugal is not a town of spectacular sights, but the beauty of the village is the village itself, filled with traditional charm! You can start your explorations around Praça Rainha Dona Leonor, the main square in Ferragudo. From this central point, you can walk toward the old town.

Discover Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, with an incredible view over the calm waters and towards the fort São João de Arade. Notice the beautiful tiles of the building. From the church, you can explore a labyrinth of small streets with white houses, cobblestone streets, and many flowers.
It’s only a 10-minute walk from the old village to the castle and the nearby beaches. You’ll see many tourists swimming and sunbathing at Praia da Angrinha and Praia Grande, and the latter has a few nice beach bars where you can enjoy a drink.

You can kayak along the coastline if you prefer an activity on the water. You can rent a kayak or a SUP board and enjoy an elf-guided paddle on the Rio Arade. You’ll pass Forte de São João and Praia Grande. Time permitting, you can paddle as far as the lighthouse and the beautiful cliffs.
🌟 It gets busy in summer, and kayaking is popular! Be sure to make your kayak reservation!
How to get to Ferragudo Portugal
Ferragudo is a village in the Algarve Region in the south of Portugal. One of the easiest ways to explore the region is by renting a car. We always rent our cars with DiscoverCars at Faro Airport. They offer competitive pricing and a clear overview of all offers. Rent with a reputable car rental company like Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, or Avis. From Faro, it’s a one-hour drive to Ferragudo.

If you stay in Portimão, you can easily take the water taxi across the river! They operate every day of the week from 10 AM to 6 PM.

You can also reach Ferragudo by public transport. The nearest train station is Estombar – Lagoa, but the local bus service is better from Lagoa and Portimão. From both locations, you can take bus service line 110. Check the bus timetable for more information.
Ferragudo beaches
Many people spend a day in Ferragudo to enjoy the many beaches! Next to Ferragudo Castle, you can visit Praia da Angrinha and Praia Grande. Further along the Atlantic coastline, you can visit Praia da Infanta, Praia do Pintadinho, Praia dos Caneiros, and Praia do Mato. The Altar Lighthouse is situated between Praia dos Caneiros and Praia do Pintadinho.

Praia da Angrinha and Praia Grande are closer to the town, and you can find a car park nearby. It gets busy, though, and I found Estacionamento Praia Grande packed and hard to access as it’s a one-way street. I suggest parking at the overflow car park and walking to the beach if it’s busy.
Ferragudo restaurants
Ferragudo is a relatively small town, but the fishing village has some lovely restaurants. Local fishermen head out to sea daily to catch fresh fish, and there is no better place than the Algarve to try the local fish. One of my favourites is the cataplana. It’s like a fish stew with potatoes and vegetables, which come in different variations. Bacalhau à Brás is another famous Portuguese dish made with cod fish. Or try fresh sardines and choco frito (fried cuttlefish)!

My favourite restaurant in Ferragudo is Ferragudu’s Terrace. They serve oysters, prawns, clams, and lobster. But they also have amazing ribeye steak for meat lovers amongst us and vegetarian dishes with local ingredients. Taberna 39 is another favourite. They have a nice terrace and lovely meals.
📍 Most restaurants are located in Rua 25 de Abril, where you can find Portuguese and international cuisine.
