If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering cobblestone streets lit by millions of twinkling lights, Lisbon might just be your Christmas fairytale come true. But while many guides vaguely mention “stunning decorations,” they rarely tell you where to find them or how to actually get there.
As a Lisbon citizen, I’ve spent multiple Decembers in Lisbon chasing the most magical light displays! From sparkling “tunnels” in Baixa to the stunning decorations on Avenida da Liberdade.
I’ve now mapped out exactly where to see the most beautiful Lisbon Christmas lights, complete with must-visit stops, local tips, and how to get between them without wasting time or missing hidden gems.
This year, there are 46 different locations, each comprising a total of 5,900 decorative pieces. That’s an equivalent of around 182 kilometres of low-energy LED lights!
Whether you’re planning a festive city break or just don’t want to miss the sparkle while you’re here, this guide (and map!) will help you experience the best of Christmas lights in Lisbon, with none of the guesswork.

Why Lisbon is so magical at Christmas
There’s something so amazing about Lisbon in December! When the sun sets at 6 PM, Lisbon illuminates with some of the best Christmas lights I’ve seen in Europe. And they are different each year!
Thousands of twinkling, bright lights are turned on every night! At the many Christmas markets, but also in storefronts and on the streets. Even the iconic trams look stunning, as they rattle past café terraces full of locals sipping mulled wine.
Lisbon during Christmas feels intimate, and it’s not just for the tourists. Many locals come to admire the lights, and the area becomes particularly busy on certain days. That’s what makes it so special, and it happens annually!

When to see the Lisbon Christmas lights
The lights are turned on in November. There are two inaugurations (more about this below), and these are the busiest events. You can expect thousands of spectators, so if crowds aren’t your thing, consider coming back later.
The lights are always turned on at 6 PM daily. Weekends are busier on the streets, and the crowds become even more intense around Christmas. The best days are Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, at the start of December.
Most Lisbon Christmas decorations remain lit until the first week of January, or Three Kings’ Day (Dia de Reis), on the 6th.
Switching on the Christmas lights in Lisbon event
The inauguration of the Lisbon Christmas lights is a major event each year, and there are two places where you can witness this tradition. One is at Praça do Comércio, where the giant Christmas tree will be turned on, and the other is at the shopping centre Armazéns do Chiado.

Top places to admire the Lisbon Christmas lights
Praça do Comércio
One of the best places to see the lights is Praça do Comércio, also known as Commerce Square. The inauguration of the Christmas lights at Praça do Comércio will take place on …. 2026 to be announced. There will be fireworks and a concert by fado singer Sara Correia.
During the Christmas season, there is an enormous tree that is lit up daily at 6 PM. The open space makes it even more amazing, and the huge yellow Pombaline façades in the background complete the scene.
The best view over the square and the nearby streets is from the Arco de Rua Augusta! The entrance is only €5.00 and the views are phenomenal! Another amazing viewpoint is from Cais das Colunas (the river steps on the south side of the square). From here, you’ll get a shot of the full square lit up.

From Praça do Comércio, you can easily explore the nearby parallel streets, which are all lit up.
How to get there: Take the blue metro line to Terreiro do Paço station, which exits directly onto the square. If you’re staying in central Lisbon, it’s an easy walk from Baixa or Chiado through Rua Augusta.
Rua Augusta + the side streets
From under the arch at Commerce Square, you walk directly onto Rua Augusta. This is the main shopping street in Lisbon. Each year, the lights feature a new theme, and select buildings are adorned with unique decorations.
There are two parallel side streets that are worth exploring. They are Rua Áurea and Rua dos Fanqueiros. These streets are often much quieter, but still worth it! At the end of the street, you will be able to visit the Christmas market on Rossio Square.
How to get there: Take the metro to Baixa-Chiado (blue or green line) and follow the signs toward Rua Augusta, it’s just a short walk from the station. You can also take the green metro line or train to Rossio.
Avenida da Liberdade
Avenida da Liberdade is the street between Rossio Square and Parque Eduardo VII. In the park, you can visit the well-known Christmas market, Wonderland Lisboa, but the walk towards it is just as spectacular!
Avenida da Liberdade is a long avenue which is surrounded by lights. It’s a busy road, but from the sidewalk, you have good views of the lights.
The street is also known for its luxury shops, and many have stunning decorations! Some highlights include the Cartier store, the Maria João Bahia jewellery store, and many more.
How to get there: Hop off at Restauradores, Avenida, or the metro station at Marques de Pombal Square (all on the blue line), which puts you right on Avenida da Liberdade. You can also walk uphill from Rossio Square.
Armazéns do Chiado
The lights at Armazéns do Chiado are always spectacular. This year, the lights will be turned on ….. 2026 to be announced. Santa will visit the shopping centre, accompanied by music and the famous LED light show.
After the inauguration, you can still enjoy shows daily! Inside the shopping centre, you can also fully soak up the Christmas atmosphere. Rua Garrett is decorated with cloud like decorations this year!
The street in front of Rua do Carmo is also stunning! There are many stores, and Nikolais is perfect for Christmas decorations. You have the best view of Armazéns do Chiado on Rua Garrett, which also includes thousands of sparkling lights.
How to get there: Ride the metro to Baixa-Chiado station (both the blue and green lines) and take the Chiado exit. Armazéns do Chiado is just a short walk away. Rua Garrett begins right outside the mall.
Praça Luís de Camões
From Rua Garrett, you can easily walk towards Luís de Camões Square. Along the way, you can spot the Galeria Fidelidade Arte Museum with lights and garlands. Tip: Wait for the tram to pass for a great picture opportunity!
Praça Luís de Camões has a new theme every time. Previously we walked through a Christmas bauble and a palace! It often has one of the most beautiful displays in the city!
How to get there: Take the metro to Baixa-Chiado station and use the Chiado exit, then walk uphill for about 5 minutes to reach Praça Luís de Camões. It’s also a stop on the iconic Tram 28 route.
Campo Pequeno
Campo Pequeno is perfect if you’re looking for a less touristy spot! It’s much quieter but just as stunning!
The bullring is covered in lights, and you can visit the Campo Pequeno Christmas market. It’s one of my favourite markets for buying local presents.
How to get there: Take the yellow metro line to Campo Pequeno station. The square and its iconic bullring (now a shopping and event space) are right above the station. It’s well-connected and easily accessible from anywhere in central Lisbon in under 15 minutes.
A photoshoot with the sparkling Christmas lights!
Seeing the lights is fantastic, but you can make your visit even more memorable! I work as a photographer in the city and offer limited-time photoshoots featuring Christmas decorations in Lisbon.
I usually start an hour before sunset to capture clients in front of some famous landmarks in the city, and finish among the thousands of sparkling lights. Prefer to shoot entirely after dark? That’s possible too, as each session is fully customisable!

A tuk-tuk tour along the sparkling decorations
Every year in the month of December, you can also book a special tuk-tuk experience to discover the lights. This is perfect if you don’t want to walk long distances, and the drivers know exactly where to bring you!

Lisbon Christmas markets with stunning decorations
Between the Christmas lights in Lisbon are also a lot of Christmas markets! The most famous ones are Wonderland Lisboa and the market on Praça do Rossio.
The one on Praça da Figueira is much-loved by foodies, and Mercado de Natal Campo Pequeno is my favourite, as you can buy lovely local products here.

How to navigate the lights efficiently
If you want to walk to see the Christmas lights, there are several routes you can take. I would start at Praça do Comércio and explore the nearby streets first. Then take a side turn to Armazéns do Chiado and Praça Luís de Camões, before visiting the Rossio Christmas market.
Continue your walk to Avenida da Liberdade and end the route at Wonderland Lisboa at Parque Eduardo VII. To walk this all, you will at least need a couple of hours.
If you want to take public transport between locations, you can make the best use of the blue metro line. Parking in Lisbon is always a challenge, and many people from near Lisbon travel to the city. If you must come by car, you can park at Eduardo VII Park or Campo das Cebolas.

Best time to discover the lights
I’m not gonna lie, Christmas in Lisbon can be busy. The closer you get to December 24th and 25th, the busier it gets. And if you’re hoping to see the lights switch on during the inauguration, expect thousands of people out enjoying the Christmas spirit.
I usually pick a date at the beginning of December and walk the streets on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The weekends are more crowded.
Sustainable and eco-friendly lighting in Lisbon
Are you wondering whether all these lights are eco-friendly? They are! The good news? Lisbon has been transitioning to energy-efficient LED bulbs for several years. They use way less power than traditional bulbs and last longer, too.
The council also keeps the lights on for fewer hours each night compared to some other European destinations. It’s a small change, but it helps reduce energy use while still maintaining the holiday vibe. Although the lights change each time, they are reused in other destinations.
