Obidos Christmas Village 2026 Your Vila Natal Guide
Christmas in Portugal is already magical, but Óbidos Christmas Village (Vila Natal) takes the festive atmosphere to a whole new level!
From 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, this small medieval town transforms into a Christmas wonderland with twinkling lights, decorations, and plenty of activities for the whole family. It’s only one hour from Lisbon and a must-see this Portuguese Christmas!
We don’t have kids, but visiting Vila Natal made us feel like children again! We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food and atmosphere. We’ve visited all the major Óbidos festivals over the years, and in our opinion, Vila Natal is definitely the prettiest of them all.
We even stayed overnight to make the most of the experience, and we can only imagine how much fun families with children would have here. From meeting Santa and riding the Christmas train to enjoying the stalls, there’s plenty to discover. And even without kids, the beautifully decorated streets are worth visiting.
Visiting Óbidos itself is free, but you’ll need a ticket to enter Vila Natal. Adult tickets cost €12 and children pay €8. In this guide, we’ll share what to expect, the best things to do, opening times, ticket prices, and practical tips for planning your visit, including where to stay if you want to enjoy this Christmas experience a little longer.
What is the Óbidos Christmas Village?
Every winter, the town transforms into a wonderland for Óbidos Vila Natal, one of Portugal’s most beautiful Christmas events. This year it’s from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and we can’t wait to visit again!

Óbidos comes alive with Christmas lights, colourful decorations, food stalls, and plenty of entertainment for adults and children alike. To keep you warm, you can enjoy hot chocolate and mulled wine.
The main attraction is Vila Natal. This is a ticketed Christmas experience in front of Óbidos Castle. Families can meet Santa Claus, enjoy the Christmas train, watch live performances, and take part in fun activities.

Attractions at Óbidos Vila Natal
This year, Pinocchio is coming to Óbidos! The famous wooden puppet is bringing his magical world to life, with colourful characters, puppets, and plenty of fun adventures for the whole family to enjoy.
You can also visit Santa’s house, and his elves will give you a warm welcome. Staff is often dressed up so you really get into the imaginary world! There are also regular shows with illusionists, magicians, comedy and puppets on the circus stage.

And your visit is only complete with a ride on the Christmas train! You’ll find it in front of the medieval castle. Face painting is available if you’re under 12 years.
But there is more! There are trampolines, there is an ice ramp, and children can play in the snow zone. There was even an ice rink, which, as a Dutchie, Marga particularly loved! You can make and send your letter to Santa Claus at the post office, and during the candy workshops, you can make your own sweets!
Of course, you can also visit the Christmas crib, a centuries-old tradition. There are real animals, such as goats, sheep, ducks, and a donkey! You can visit the food court between the games and find warm drinks and something to eat.

Things to do in Óbidos at Christmas beyond Vila Natal
If you have no kids, it might not be worth visiting Óbidos Vila Natal, as most of the events are for children. That is actually what we did the first year when visiting in December, and there are so many other things to do! (Curiosity got the better of use, so we did visit the year after!)
The historic centre is beautifully decorated, especially along Rua Direita, where you’ll find shops, local treats, and traditional ginjinha served in chocolate cups.

And the best part? You can explore the decorated streets for free! The town has 14 bookshops that you can visit, and the shops on Rua Direita are beautifully decorated.
Some of our favourites are Loja do Lagar, Chocolateria Prazer E Vício, Livraria do Mercado, and Mercearia d’Óbidos. The shops and Christmas stalls are perfect for buying presents or a souvenir for the home front.

We also call walking over the castle walls as the views are stunning! If it’s windy, this can be a bit cold though, and be careful as there are no railings!
Foodies will also enjoy the town. Our recommendations are JamonJamon, Avocado Coffee & Healthy Food, A Nova Casa de Ramiro, and Madok.
What to wear in Óbidos during the Christmas season
Although Portugal is a relatively warm country, even in winter, it can get icy cold! The humidity is high, and the temperatures can drop to under 10°C (50°F). Add some wind, and it gets pretty cold in Óbidos in December.

We definitely underestimated the cold during our visit! As we stayed overnight, we noticed just how chilly it got once the sun went down. Our advice is to dress warmly and wear plenty of layers, especially if you’re planning to enjoy Vila Natal in the evening.

What is the best time to visit Vila Natal?
Vila Natal can get quite busy, especially on weekends. We recommend arriving early in the day, preferably on a weekday for the quietest time. It tends to get busier as the afternoon goes on.
However, Vila Natal is at its prettiest after dark, which starts late afternoon around 5:30 PM. The fairy lights illuminate the events and the castle setting is super romantic. The lights certainly makes it special.

Many day trippers leave around dinner time so it can also get quieter again in the evening. If you have the time, we’d recommend staying until after sunset to enjoy both sides of Vila Natal.
How do you get to the Óbidos Christmas Market?
Óbidos is a fun day trip from Lisbon and there are 3 easy ways to get there. When you travel to Óbidos specifically for the Christmas event, we highly recommend renting a car or going by bus.
By car
Óbidos is easy to reach from Lisbon. If you rent a car in Portugal, the drive takes just an hour. The village is just off the A8, and is super easy to reach. From the car park, it’s a short walk to the centre and castle.
In total, there are five parking areas in Óbidos. Three are paid, and two are free. There is a total capacity of over 4,000 vehicles. Click on the banner to find the best deals with DiscoverCars. We rent cars with them all the time, and have had great experiences.
Travel to Óbidos with public transport
There is also a bus service from Lisbon to Óbidos. Rodotejo bus company has a service (Rapids Verde) from Campo Grande terminal. It takes around one hour to one hour and a half get to Óbidos.
Book an excursion
If you don’t want to rent a car or have no driver’s license, a guided tour to Óbidos might suit you best. You’ll get to wander around town, but as you travel in a group, there might not be time to visit Vila Natal.
Tours from the Portuguese capital are often combined with other towns such as Fátima, Nazaré, and Batalha. With a private tour, you might be able to change the schedule, if you speak with the tour guide up front.
Staying overnight to visit Óbidos during Christmas
To fully enjoy the Christmas spirit, stay for a night! It’s quiet in town at night, and you can fully enjoy the magic of this medieval town.
We stayed in Valentine’s House during one of our winter trips and loved it! It’s a short walk from the main festivities and it was huge! Perfect for larger families and they had heaters and a fire place.
Please note that many homes have no heating in Portugal, but hotels and B&Bs are often equipped with a fireplace or electric heater to keep you warm. Double-check the heating situation before booking your accommodation.
Below, you’ll find three more gorgeous places to stay, including a handy map to find your dream accommodation.

Is it worth staying overnight during Christmas?
I think so! We decided to stay overnight during our Christmas visit, which meant we didn’t have to rush back to Lisbon after enjoying Vila Natal. Thankfully, cancellations of the event are rare.

Óbidos Vila Natal is partially wheelchair accessible, with a dedicated entrance for visitors with reduced mobility. We especially recommend staying overnight if you have the chance. It gives you more time to enjoy the Christmas lights, have a relaxed dinner, and explore Óbidos without rushing back to Lisbon. For us, it made the whole experience at this magical place even better!
And if you’re visiting Portugal at another time of year, Óbidos is still worth a trip! The town hosts several other events, including the Chocolate Festival in spring, the Medieval Festival in July and FOLIO, the International Literary Festival, in October.
