Spring brings colour to the cities, summers are made for beaches and long evenings, autumn is calm and golden, and winters are mild with a cosy, festive atmosphere. Frequently asked questions about seasons and weather in Portugal

What is the best season to visit Portugal?

That depends on your travel style. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing and city trips, summer is best for beaches, and winter is great for quieter cities and mild weather in most regions.

Does it rain a lot in Portugal?

Portugal has a Mediterranean climate, so rain is limited and mostly falls between November and March. Even then, rainy days are often mixed with sunshine, especially in Lisbon and the Algarve.

Can it snow in Portugal?

Yes, but only in specific areas. Snow usually falls in the mountains, especially in Serra da Estrela during winter. Most of Portugal, including Lisbon and Porto, does not see snow.

What should I pack for different seasons in Portugal?

Pack light layers year-round. Bring sunscreen and light clothing for spring and summer, and a waterproof jacket plus comfortable shoes for autumn and winter city trips. Wearing layers between October and April is your best bet!
