The town is the perfect place for relaxation, and it is best known for its thermal baths in Caldas de Monchique!

In addition to relaxing in the Termas de Monchique, the town has some sights, and the narrow, cobbled streets are a pleasure to walk through. I’ll also happily share tips if you prefer hiking in the Monchique mountain range. There are many trails, and the surrounding landscape is beautiful!
Monchique is a fun day trip from the coast. It’s a good place for families, but solo travellers and couples might like the spa treatments at a Monchique resort. We spent a day relaxing for a birthday celebration, and it was lovely to be surrounded by nature. We personally love staying in less busy destinations, and Monchique was perfect for a getaway.
The town of Monchique is only 45 minutes away by car from Lagos and 40 minutes from Portimão. In this post, I will explain how to get there and what to expect. You can also join one of the tours to explore the town and surrounding mountains. What to see in Monchique, Portugal?
Monchique isn’t a place with famous sights and must-see attractions, but the town’s charm is the biggest reason to spend some hours here. You can start by enjoying the view from Miradouro de Monchique or Miradouro de São Sebastião. You have a lovely view of the municipality and the Serra de Monchique mountains from here.
Monchique is a labyrinth of narrow streets with cobblestones and white houses. Discover the Igreja Matriz de Monchique, the main church in the centre, and the many traditional handicraft shops. You can buy amazing honey, tapestry, whicker baskets, and ceramics. There is also a small park with a playground for children.
The Nossa Senhora do Desterro Convent is located on the edge of town. Unfortunately, the Franciscan convent is largely gone, but the ruins can still be seen.
Restaurants in Monchique
Monchique isn’t very big, so it’s easy to find most restaurants in town. In the centre around Largo de Monchique are some nice places. You can enjoy a Portuguese lunch at Restaurante Café da Vila or go for tapas at Tradições de Monchique.
Discover Caldas de Monchique
Caldas de Monchique translates to the “baths of Monchique.” Thermal baths were popular in Roman times and are still why many people visit the town. The Romans considered the water sacred, and so did the Moorish later. They called it the Sacred Mountain, or Munt Šāqir.
Caldas de Monchique is located a bit further down the mountain. The thermal spring hotels are surrounded by buildings, such as houses, the Monchique mineral water factory, restaurants, and a chapel.
Before you start enjoying a day filled with wellness, visit the beautiful old baths at Fonte dos Amores. There are several pools and cascades, as well as tables for picnics. It’s a little oasis of peace and the perfect spot for relaxation. It’s also very photogenic, so bring a camera!
Bathing in Caldas de Monchique
When you want to relax in the healing waters, it’s time to visit Villa Termal das Caldas de Monchique. Although parts of the building looked a bit dated (mostly the dressing rooms), we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the thermal baths!
The water was very warm (32.1 Cº/89.78 °F), and my skin felt amazing afterwards! The healing water is good for digestive, respiratory, rheumatic, and musculoskeletal diseases. Different streams in the water massage your body, and loungers allow you to relax.
Hiking in the Monchique mountains
The Algarve coast is relatively flat, but the further you travel inland, the higher the mountains become. The surrounding mountain range is the Monchique Mountains or Serra de Monchique. Mount Fóia is the highest point, at 902 meters (2959 feet).
On a clear day, you can enjoy the best views of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. You can drive all the way to Miradouro da Fóia, so no hiking is necessary if you don’t feel up for it. The nature here is beautiful, and it’s full of pine trees, eucalyptus, heather, cork trees and orange trees. Many birds love the hills, so bring binoculars!
Serra de Monchique is popular for hiking, and there are some amazing trails to discover. We use the AllTrails app to do all our research, and it’s also useful during the hikes. One amazing trail we found was the Rota das Adelfeiras, and the Trilho da Fóia leads to the highest peak.

From Lagos: Monchique Private Guided Hike + Medronho Tasting
Although the Algarve region is very dry, there are some waterfalls. If the season is right, I highly recommend Cascata do Barbelote and Cascata do Chilrão. The trail is a challenging 11.7 kilometres (7.27 miles) loop but one of the best near Monchique.
We would love to explore Passadiços Barranco do Demo the next time we visit. This hike takes place on a boardwalk through the mountains. And the Barranco dos Pisões is also on our wishlist. This area contains centenarian trees!
How to get to Monchique, Algarve
By car
Monchique is the easiest and fastest to reach by rental car, especially if you want to explore the village’s surroundings and the natural beauty of the hills. We rented a vehicle from Faro Airport with DiscoverCars to explore this part of southern Portugal.
From the A22 motorway, take the N124, followed by the N266. You’ll reach Monchique in around 40 minutes from Portimão. There is a free car park near Miradouro de Monchique, and it’s only a few minutes to walk into town. Click the banner below to find the best car rental rates for your trip!
With public transport
You can also take the bus from Portimão to Monchique. The drive takes about 45 minutes, and the current timetable is available here. Before taking the bus, you can take a bus or train to Portimão from other parts of the Algarve.
With an excursion
Excursions to the west of the Algarve are also available. An organised tour of Monchique is perfect if you want to see many things in one day. Most tours stop at multiple places in the hills, and some include wine and food tastings!
Places to visit nearby
Are you curious about the world of olive oil? Then, a visit to Azeite de Monchique is a must. They offer several tours and experiences, including plenty of tastings! You can make your reservation online and buy local produce afterwards.
If you’d like to try a local liquor, I highly recommend Casa do Medronho in Marmelete. Aguardente de Medronhos is a brandy with a high alcohol content. It’s made from the Medronho fruit, which grows in the Algarve mountains.

Aljezur is a stunning village further west that is easy to combine with a day trip. One of the highlights is visiting Aljezur Castle, and the white-washed houses complete the stunning atmosphere.
Silves is a must if you prefer to stay closer to the coast. The Castelo de Silves overlooks the city, and the gothic cathedral Sé de Silves is another must-see. The city is beautifully located on the Arade River and has many restaurants.
Hotels in Monchique
Many visitors come to Caldas de Monchique to enjoy wellness and relaxation. The Vila Termal das Caldas De Monchique spa resort has multiple accommodations, such as Pure Monchique Hotel and Central Monchique Hotel. Chalet Monchique is another option, and the Monchique Resort & Spa is perfect for those looking for a luxury experience.
Vilafoia was our favourite option. The eco-friendly guesthouse offers stunning views and an outdoor swimming pool. It is surrounded by cork trees and the Serra de Monchique mountains. If you’re looking to rewind, you’ll love it here! And their breakfast was fantastic, too!
At Parque da Mina, you can stay in a luxury tent! The tents have comfortable beds, and the outhouse has a toilet and shower. It’s a unique place in nature with many farm animals!
