Discover the best places for shopping in Lisbon

Although many people visit Lisbon for sightseeing, the city is also great for shopping! But where can you find the best shopping streets? What are some great Portuguese brands? Is there anything special to buy in the stores? I am a local in Lisbon, and I will happily tell you more about the places where you can shop in Lisbon.

Shopping in Lisbon overview

  • Some of the major shopping areas in Lisbon are near: Rua Garrett, Avenida da Liberdade, Rua Augusta, Parque das Nações, Principe Real, the LX Factory, and many more!
  • What sort of shops can you expect in Lisbon? Just like other major European cities, Lisbon has a wide variety of shops. You can visit a flea or antique market and discover high-street shops and luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel. If you love vintage clothing, there are also many vintage shops to find.
  • Is it cheaper to shop in Lisbon? This answer depends on where you are travelling from. The prices for clothes seem average by European standards, but if you travel from the Middle East or North America, they are probably cheaper.

Best Lisbon shopping streets and how to get there

Whether you like markets, vintage stores, high-street shops, or luxury brands, Lisbon is a great city for shopping! But as a first-time visitor, you might need some help finding the best shops and stores.

As a Lisbon local, I’ll happily share some tips and tricks. You can also use the map below, where I marked some Lisbon shopping districts. I speak from my own experience, and no stores sponsored me in any way.

Rua Augusta and downtown Lisbon shopping

Rua Augusta is one of the busiest streets downtown, and you can also find some stores in this area. The shopping street starts at Praça do Comércio and the arch Arco da Rua Augusta. You can follow the street towards Rossio Square, and there are many side streets where you can discover stores.

You’ll find high-street stores and some shops that have been here for years! You’ll notice this also in the many beautiful storefronts. Some of the major shopping streets are Rua do Carmo, Áurea, and Rua Garrett. You can also find some nice shops inside Armazéns do Chiado’s shopping centre. Examples are FNAC, Sephora, Mango, Natura, and the Sunglass Hut.

Are you in Lisbon for Christmas? Then, the facade will be amazingly decorated! And the interior of Zara on Rossio Square is also stunning. So, while shopping, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Luvaria Ulisses (gloves) and Tous Jewelry are historic stores worth checking out. Or head over to the 4th floor at the Benetton store and discover a century-old elevator! The bookstore Livraria Bertrand in Chiado is the world’s oldest bookstore that is still in use! When you buy a book, they will even stamp it for you. Purchase a Portuguese cookbook or a book by iconic Portuguese writers such as Fernando Pessoa.

If you love accessories, it’s worth visiting Gomes & Góis, where you can find Portuguese fillagree jewellery. Claus Porto is great for soaps and perfumes. There are many Portuguese stores in Chiado, and it’s worth exploring the many side streets. This is how I bought all our plates and mugs at the ceramic store Cerâmicas na Linha.

Avenida da Liberdade

If you’re wondering where to find the major luxury brands, head to Avenida da Liberdade. This street starts just after Rossio Square and runs all the way to Marques de Pombal Square.

You can find well-known brands such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Cartier, Prada, etc. The blue metro line runs underneath this street, and the nearest stations are Restauradores, Avenida, and Marques de Pombal.

El Corte Inglés

If you prefer indoor shopping in Lisbon, visit the department store El Corte Inglés near Parque Eduardo VII. The nearest metro station is also on the blue line at São Sebastião, and the red line also crosses here. Just like on Avenida da Liberdade, you can find some of the biggest names in fashion at the department store.

Examples are Jimmy Choo, DKNY, GAP, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and many more. Besides clothes shopping, you can also find a supermarket, several restaurants, and a cinema on the ground floor. On the outside of the building is a Decathlon, in case you’re looking for sportswear.

EmbaiXada

The Príncipe Real neighbourhood is known for its many bars and restaurants, but there are also some fantastic shops! EmbaiXada is one of these mindblowing places, and when you step inside, you can see why! The shopping centre is inside the beautiful Ribeiro da Cunha Palace. It has several floors with national brands, such as Chumeco, Fairly Normal, and A Industria. You can even enjoy a meal or a cocktail on the ground floor!

Across the road, at the Príncipe Real Garden, is often an outdoor market in the summer months. And next to Jardim do Príncipe Real Loja Real, with many more unique clothes and accessories. Rua da Escola Politécnica runs between metro station Rato (yellow line) towards the viewpoint Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, where it changes to Rua Dom Pedro. You can find some of the best shops in Lisbon along the street!

LX Factory

The LX Factory is located towards the eastern part of town, and this is one of the hippest hotspots to go shopping. You can enjoy a unique shopping experience as you can find lots of street art and restaurants between the many shops! It’s also a fun place to buy souvenirs, and you can find some Portuguese brands. Buy canned fish from Lojas das Conservas, or discover the lovely skin car products from Bam and Boo and Benamôr 1925.

Remember to take a look inside the bookstore Ler Devagar. The interior is incredible, and you can even find a huge press on the top floor! They also sell many English books and fantastic vinyl. There is also a Sunday market at the LX Factory where you can buy fresh produce, and many events in the evenings. You can even stay at the LX hostel, and with so many restaurants nearby, it’s a great place to stay!

Tip!

Discover the market at 8 Marvila in the up and coming Marvila neighbourhood. There are often flea markets and pop up stores.

Feira da Ladra

Feira da Ladra is one of the most famous flea markets in Lisbon! It occurs every Tuesday and Saturday from 9 AM until 6 PM. You can find the Campo de Santa Clara flea market right before the National Pantheon. You can find antiques, vintage clothing, shoes, accessories, souvenirs, furniture, and many other things!

The vibe at Feira da Ladra is lovely, with some nice cafes and restaurants nearby. Enjoy a coffee at Copenhagen Coffee Lab, lunch at Tabernita, or dinner at Santa Clara dos Cogumelos. Feira da Ladra is near Alfama, so if you’re interested in discovering the historic centre, you can go before or after visiting the flea market.

Vintage shops in Lisbon

If you love vintage fashion, you will have a great time! Humana is a large chain with several stores all over town. You’ll find primarily high-street brands, but you might be lucky and discover some luxury gems! All their profits go to a great cause, so you’ll support people while shopping.

I also like Dona Ajuda, which is near Rato Station. This hidden gem is at Mercado do Rato, where you can find vintage clothing, furniture, and much more!

In Chiado, you can find POP Closet, which has lots of sustainable fashion, or discover Outra Face da Lua in the Baixa shopping area. Ás de Espadas is another one of my favourites in Baixa. You can also visit NewJester Vintage for Man and Zip Gum Boogie next door!

Markets in Lisbon

Some of the best shopping can be done at the many Lisbon markets! Besides the Feira da Ladra flea market, there are often summer markets near Principe Real Garden, Avenida da Liberdade, Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, and Miradouro da Graça.

The Jardim Dom Luis market is centrally located, and you can easily combine this with visiting Mercado da Ribeira. At this market, you can buy fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, meat, and fish.

Next to Mercado da Ribeira, you can find the famous Time Out Market. There is a massive food court where you can enjoy lunch or dinner, but it can be busy here. I highly recommend Mercado de Campo de Ourique if you prefer a local food court.

Shopping malls in Lisbon

If you prefer an indoor shopping centre, you can choose from many different shopping malls in Lisbon. Colombo Shopping Centre is one of the easiest to get to, and many international chains exist! You can take the blue metro line to Colégio Militar/Luz, and the mall has a huge food court at the top level. Other floors contain mainly high-street shops and a cinema and supermarket.

Centro Vasco da Gama is ideal if you stay near Parque das Nações and Oriente Station. It has stores similar to Colombo’s, with international brands on two floors. The Amoreiras Shopping Centre has more luxury brands and is near Marques de Pombal. You can finish your shopping trip by visiting the Amoreiras 360º Panoramic View for one of the best views over the city!

Outlet shops in Lisbon

Who doesn’t love a good deal? Thankfully, there are also some outlet malls in Lisbon! The Strada Outlet is located on the north side of town, and you can find outlet stores for Adidas, Benfica, lefties, Nike, and more. You can discover the El Corte Inglés Outlet in Amadora nearby.

You can also visit Freeport Fashion Outlet on the south side of the Tagus River. The outlet is in Alcochete, and the easiest way to get there is by shuttle bus. You can also reach the outlet by crossing the Vasco da Gama Bridge if you have a car.

🛍️ Book the shuttle bus to visit Freeport Fashion Outlet for a day of shopping!

Where can I buy nice souvenirs in Lisbon, Portugal?

You can buy many fabulous souvenirs in Portugal, and some lovely souvenir shops in Lisbon, too! I love the ceramic tiles from By Nunes, for example! They are super colourful and make a great gift! The A Vida Portuguesa shop is another fantastic place to buy souvenirs. They sell lovely home accessories, books, notebooks, candles, and more!

In the downtown shopping area, you can visit Madalena à Janela, which sells beautiful Portuguese arts and crafts. If you love gifting tea, Companhia Portugueza do Chá in Bairro Alto is fantastic! You can also make your own perfume at the beautiful Next Memory Atelier on Rua São José.

I moved to Lisbon; where do I buy my day-to-day things?

The furniture stores are mainly located outside the city centre. There is an IKEA in Loures and Alfragide. Alfragide is central to most people’s needs, and you can find many more stores here, such as Conforama and Home Space. If you move to Almada, you can find all these stores, and Jysk is another nice store.

FNAC and Worten are the most common electrical stores. They are located in most shopping malls.

I usually buy my cat food in bulk online. Zu has a good selection, and there are regular deals at Zoo Plus. Perfect for most pets! Supermarkets also sell a lot of pet food but often don’t have the speciality food.
